2020 has been a strange year, with covid-19 throwing the whole world into turmoil. Unfortunately, we are kicking off 2021 with a third UK lockdown; but with vaccines now being rolled out across the country, we are hopeful that we will soon be free from this global pandemic…
COVID-19 Impact on Mental Health
Working from home, being unable to see friends or family and closures of local shops and restaurants has really taken a toll on us all. But the silver lining to this pandemic is that it has given us much more TIME. In this frenzied world that we live in, we are often so busy with our own lives that we forget what’s important: our health and our loved ones.
For some of us, just getting out of bed in the mornings has been enough of a challenge, whilst others have taken up new hobbies and enjoyed binge-watching Netflix during lockdown. Because what else is there to do when everything is shut besides watching endless cat videos on YouTube?! We’ve put together a list of our top 10 things to do during a global pandemic for inspiration!
Top 10 Things to Do During Lockdown 3.0
Get plenty of sleep. As obvious as this one may be, often we do not give ourselves enough time to relax and recharge. Take this rare opportunity of less commuting and more time at home to rest and sneak in extra lie-ins each morning.
Work on your fitness. Now is a great time to reassess your eating and exercising habits. You could create a meal plan and prep meals in bulk or take up a new exercise such as yoga or running. If you are ever feeling down, get outside and go for a leisurely walk – this will increase your serotonin levels, leaving you feeling brighter.
Have an early spring clean. It feels so rewarding to have a good sort out and tidy up! Go through each room in your house and have a deep clean, decluttering any items that you no longer want or need.
Get on top of digital admin tasks. After spring cleaning the house, you could spring clean your phone or laptop, getting rid of unwanted apps and downloads that are taking up precious memory space. Move your photos over to a hard drive, the cloud or print them out – you could even put together a scrap book!
Have a movie night. Get some popcorn and your favourite drinks in, and snuggle up on the sofa with a good film.
Bake a cake. I’m not going to encourage you to empty the supermarket shelves of flour and baking ingredients; but there is something so wonderful and cheerful about a home that smells of freshly baked cakes or biscuits!
Take a long bath. In our daily busy lives, we can often neglect self-care. Take a long, hot bath to hydrate your skin, soak your muscles and release tension. This will really help you to relax and get a good night’s sleep after a stressful day.
Gaze upon the stars. Those clear, winter nights provide the perfect opportunity for stargazing. Retreat to the outdoors with some blankets, a hot water bottle and cocoa, and enjoy watching the stars with your loved ones.
Catch up with friends and family. Host a Zoom or phone call with your friends and family. Catch up with each other and share any worries, before playing some fun online games together and laughing the night away.
Make a gratitude list. Write down all the things you are grateful for in your life. Yes, life is a bit rubbish at the moment, but we always have things to be grateful for – our health, our home, our family, our friends and so on…
